Job Summary

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Technician in Clothing and Textiles in the Department of Creative and Applied Arts and Design.

Key Responsibilities

(i) Assist with monitoring equipment or materials for students; (ii) Prepare equipment for assigned laboratory/workshop classes, (iii) Assist with practical evaluation/grading of student laboratory work, tests, tutorials and workshops; (iv) Assist in procurement of laboratory/workshop and studio sundries; (v) Maintain inventory of stocks and equipment loans issued from the assigned laboratories, (vi) Operate and perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure equipment functionality, (vii) Detect and report faults within the premises; (viii) Demonstrate and monitor equipment or materials for experiments to students and researchers; (ix) Communicate effectively to understand laboratory or workshop requirements and help accordingly; (x) Maintain a clean and organized laboratory/ workshop/ studio environment following health and safety protocols and guidelines; (xi) Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks; (xii) Respond to customer/ stakeholder queries and inquiries related to area of expertise; (xiii) Collaborate with other units as needed to effectively deliver duties as defined; (xiv) Actively engage with the professional community to support and develop expertise in area of profession; (xv) Comply with relevant regulations and legislation and undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor/Line Manager/Head of School in line with their role.

Requirements

Candidates should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics/ Family and Consumer Sciences with courses in clothing construction or related relevant field.

Added advantages: (i) at least one year of relevant experience as a teacher, technician or demonstrator in a Home Economics / Family and Consumer Sciences lab specifically in clothing area; (ii) working at a university or comparable institution; (iii) member of recognised professional body.

Other Requirements: (i) Ability to operate and troubleshoot various educational technologies and equipment; (ii) Evidence of ensuring accuracy in preparation of materials and grading; (iii) Basic understanding of technical equipment and maintenance procedures; (iv) Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn and develop technical skills; (v) Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
