Job Description

Basic Function of the Position

The Artisan Fitter will be responsible for carrying out mechanical fitting, maintenance, and repair activities on mining equipment and infrastructure in accordance with MMG’s global operational standards, OEM requirements, and statutory obligations. The role will be ensuring equipment availability, reliability, and performance to support continuous and safe mining operations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing scheduled and unscheduled mechanical maintenance and repairs on fixed and mobile plant equipment.
  • Installing, aligning, dismantling and moving machinery and heavy mechanical components in compliance with approved rigging practices.
  • Support commissioning, modifications and upgrades of mechanical systems.
  • Conducting inspections, diagnostics, and fault-finding on pumps, fans, piping systems and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Using precision tools and instruments for measurements, fits and alignments.
  • Conducting inspections and risk assessments prior to and during work execution.
  • Reporting defects, incidents and near misses promptly and participating in root cause investigations.
  • Collaborating with supervisors, engineers and fellow artisans to complete jobs efficiently and accurately.
  • Effecting daily job cards for all work to be undertaken in line with safety measures and time schedules set therein.
  • Complying with all statutory appointments and requirements in accordance with the MQWM Act and its regulations.
  • Ensuring that the critical spares are available at all times.

Minimum Qualifications, Competencies and Experience Required for Effective Performance

  • National Craft Certificate in Maintenance Fitting or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a mining or heavy industrial environment as a qualified Maintenance Fitter.
  • Previous legal appointment as per MQWMA (advantageous).
  • Valid Rigging and Slinging certification are added advantages.
  • Supervisory development training is an added advantage.
