The Chief Mine Geologist is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing geological policies, procedures, and practices for the safe, profitable and efficient extraction of resources across the Motheo Operations.

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing geological policies, procedures, and practices for the safe, profitable and efficient extraction of resources across the Motheo Operations. The Chief Mine geologist assists the Geology Manager in the development of annual CAPEX and OPEX budgets whilst managing the ongoing financial performance of the geological department.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Develops strategies, policies, procedures, and standards to guide the activities carried out by the geological team at the Motheo Operations.
  • Participates in and provides an advisory influence on the development and documentation of the geological models to meet operational requirements, whilst overseeing the maintenance and upgrade of electronic and manual databases and geological plans.
  • Oversees the collection and collation of geological data whilst managing and participating in the preparation of technical reports, maps and models. This includes the management of all mineral resource estimation model updates (Motheo Projects) for annual corporate Resource / Reserve statement releases.
  • Direct and oversee the planning and execution of all near-mine exploration and grade control activities to best practice across the Motheo Operations whilst fostering a close working relationship with the Regional Exploration Team.
  • Monitors systems and statistics to maintain quality of grade control standards and provides advice and training to geological staff where required.
  • Develops and manages a network of project specialists and technical consultants and
  • Work closely with HSEC to promote and participate in improvement plans, initiatives and training. Actively promote Sandfire safety culture and values.
  • Assist in the development of annual CAPEX and OPEX budgets whilst managing the ongoing financial performance of the geological department.
  • Assist in the recruitment of high calibre operational personnel whilst managing, developing, and mentoring geological staff.
  • Assist in the implementation of the graduate development program at Motheo.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of Mineral Resources Estimation techniques.
  • Sound knowledge of drilling and mining methods; grade control systems and procedures; resources modelling techniques and related software.
  • QA/QC Principles.
  • Database Management.
  • Mine Financial Valuation.
  • Geological Modelling.

Behaviours/Personal Attributes

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Qualification & Experience

  • Degree (4 years) in Geology from a recognised University.
  • Post-graduate studies highly regarded (Hons / MSc).
  • Eligibility for Institute Membership (AIG and/or AusIMM highly regarded).
  • Minimum of 12 years post qualification mining experience covering all aspects of mine geology, with at least 5 years open pit mining experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a frontline management leadership role.
  • International Experience desirable.
