This position is responsible for managing the implementation of Sandfire’s Sustainability strategy, ESG reporting requirements and explore and execute sustainability initiatives that support the company’s strategy and vision.

The role is required to provide sound advice and support to operational business units, and corporate functions and continue to retain internal and external stakeholder confidence.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Support the development and implementation of Sandfire’s sustainability & ESG strategy and initiatives including:
    • Strategic plans, goals, objectives, targets and actions, ensuring alignment with Sandfire’s corporate objectives, strategy and values.
    • Mainstream and maintain necessary policies and standards.
  • Establish and maintain a robust sustainability data management system, ensuring thorough documentation and reporting standards are met and data integrity is upheld.
  • Identify and manage environmental and climate risks associated with Sandfire’s operations, prioritising actions that minimise adverse impacts and optimise opportunities.
  • Establish and execute a second-line assurance program to support continuous improvement in environmental sustainability.
  • Contribute to the implementation of Sandfire net zero pathway of achieving net zero.
  • Participate and render expert advice, analysis and support for projects for off-grid mining application and community social impact investment in energy projects as well as mobilisation for project financing through partnerships.
  • Manage and support both internal and external sustainability reporting obligations, including the preparation of Sandfire’s annual Sustainability Report.
  • Support the development of clear and compelling external communications regarding Sandfire’s sustainability strategy, initiatives and progress.
  • Collaborate with business partners and business units as well as assets as needed to provide support to ensure the successful execution of sustainability initiatives.
  • Undertake stakeholder engagements and campaigns on the importance of environmental sustainability and climate action in supporting Sandfire’s sustainability strategy.
  • Provide guidance on company alignment with appropriate sustainability frameworks, including sustainability goals in the global architecture, incorporation of best practices.
  • Manage the ESG due diligence process for new acquisitions and contracts
  • Develop appropriate external communications regarding the company’s ESG strategy, initiatives and progress and form responses to external ESG related queries
  • Working with the business units to inform and educate and ensure that key stakeholders understand the role that they play in supporting the Sandfire ESG strategy.
  • Advise on and align with appropriate ESG external frameworks and best practice in relation to current and emerging ESG topics.
  • Coach & mentor team members to develop skills necessary for effective sustainability management, monitoring their performance, and facilitating their professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, BSC, Biology or Sustainability, Energy or a related discipline.  A post Graduate Degree in a related field will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in environmental, energy or sustainability management with operational experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial level experience.

Technical/ Behavioural Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of sustainability related legislation, and best practice initiatives including within policy frameworks and reporting.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams.
  • Sound knowledge of office related computer equipment and software, including SharePoint, Pronto and INX or any related ERP System.
