Job Description
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To coordinate, supervise and manage treasury accounting operations through effective cashflow management, payment processing, bank reconciliations, liquidity monitoring, foreign exchange administration, treasury controls and financial compliance in order to ensure operational continuity, financial integrity, regulatory compliance and efficient utilisation of corporate funds within a national commercial airline environment.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Key Performance Areas)
The Treasury Accountant will be responsible for, among others, the following:
Treasury Operations & Cashflow Management
- Monitor daily cash positions and ensure adequate liquidity across all operational bank accounts.
- Prepare rolling cashflow forecasts and support short, medium and long-term liquidity planning.
- Manage daily treasury activities including banking transactions, EFTs, RTGS payments and reconciliations.
- Ensure optimal cash utilisation and adherence to treasury controls and financial governance standards.
- Support foreign currency management and liaise with banks on competitive exchange rates for international payments.
Payment Processing & Financial Control
- Review and authorise payment batches prior to processing.
- Ensure timely preparation of payment documentation, remittance advice and supporting schedules.
- Monitor supplier payments and ensure adherence to agreed payment timelines.
- Ensure accurate posting of treasury transactions into the General Ledger.
- Maintain and reconcile treasury suspense accounts and cash books.
Bank Reconciliations & Banking Administration
- Perform and review bank reconciliations and investigate outstanding variances.
- Liaise with banks and internal stakeholders regarding uncleared items, rejected payments and treasury queries.
- Ensure daily banking of receipts and proper treasury documentation management.
- Maintain banking registers and treasury records in accordance with financial procedures and audit requirements.
Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with IFRS, GAAP, internal financial policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support internal and external audit processes through provision of treasury schedules and reconciliations.
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls within treasury operations.
- Monitor treasury-related risks and contribute to mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable aviation governance, corporate policies and financial management procedures.
Reporting & Financial Analysis
- Prepare treasury reports, liquidity reports and cashflow analysis for Management.
- Analyse treasury trends, banking costs and operational financial exposures.
- Assist with month-end and year-end financial reporting activities.
- Support budgeting and financial planning processes.
Leadership & Operational Support
- Supervise treasury staff and support capacity building within the section.
- Identify process improvement opportunities to strengthen treasury efficiency and controls.
- Support finance transformation initiatives, system improvements and automation projects.
- Uphold safety, security and operational compliance standards in line with airline operational requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications and Professional Requirements
Applicants must possess:
- A recognised Degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent required
- Professional Accounting Qualification such as: ACCA, CIMA, CA, CPA or equivalent recognised qualification and/or part qualification, an added advantage.
- Membership with a recognised professional accounting body such as BICA or equivalent, required.
- Valid knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial governance frameworks
Minimum Experience Required
Applicants should have:
- A minimum of six (6) years relevant post-graduate accounting experience of which at least three (3) years should have been in treasury, finance operations or financial management at supervisory or middle-management level
- Experience within the aviation, transport, logistics or highly regulated operational environment will be an added advantage
- Proven experience and working knowledge of ERP systems such as Sage, Oracle, SAP or equivalent financial systems
