Technician – Standards & Technology – Botswana Power Corporation

Main purpose of the position

To plan and carry out quality assurance testing and inspections of newly procured electrical distribution equipment and material to guarantee compliance to distribution set standards and specifications.

Job Responsibilities

• Plans the testing and / or inspection of procured materials and distribution power equipment in accordance with delivery schedules to meet projects timeline and distribution operational needs.
• Inspects and / or tests newly procured materials and distribution power equipment before issuing out from Supply Chain to ensure compliance to set standards.
• Recommends acceptance and/or rejection of materials or equipment from supply chain in accordance with Standards Requirements for Distribution Systems (SRDS).
• Initiates and participate in the acquisition of department test equipment, its care and maintenance to ensures availability and accuracy of department testing equipment.
• Investigates causes of defects related to product usage and recommend solutions to prevent or minimise recurrence.
• Participate in supply chain tender evaluations and provide technical guidance to the evaluation committee to certify procurement of compliant materials and equipment.
• Attends and witnesses factory acceptance tests (FATs) procedures of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to ensure compliance to BPC specifications and relevant international standards.
• Compiles and document newly procured defective or non-compliant material or equipment data and submit to supervisor for actioning
• Collate and analyse technical data to determine efficient and effective alternative solutions.
• Updates and maintains the database of test results and equipment information to facilitate referencing.
• Provide technical support to contractors and Distribution teams during installation and operations of new equipment designs to minimise injury and / or damage.
• Addresses suppliers, manufacturers and contractors’ inquiries or complaints and give technical advice to promote client relationship and customer satisfaction.
• Provide technical support to supply chain when Bidders request for clarity on technical specifications.
• Identifies shortcomings in distribution network and recommends alternative designs or material for piloting to enhance network stability.
• Evaluates technical processes and recommends for review to ensure efficiency and improvement.
• Visit construction sites to observe conditions that affect the design and find solutions to problems with a technical design that may be present in the construction of electrical systems.
• Benchmarks & recommends change and adoption of new technology to keep up with best practice industry standards.
• Adheres to all Safety Health and Environmental and Risk standards contained in the Corporation’s SHER policies and procedures.
• Promotes safety awareness in line with SHER requirements through periodic audits to ensure compliance to set safety standards.

Qualifications

• Recognised Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Professional Membership of the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required.
• Class B Drivers Licence is required
• Senior Authorisation is added advantage

Experience

• At least five (5) years post qualification experience in electricity supply industry, two (2) of which would have been in power equipment operations, maintenance, or projects management.
