Title: Senior Underground Engineering Manager

Purpose of the Role
Provide strategic direction to the H2 Projects Engineering discipline through the development and implementation of a group engineering strategy and framework aligned with overall business strategy, informed by technical best practices and in consultation with operations, other technical discipline leads, and the Techno Economics (LOM) and business improvement functions. Provide assurance on effective strategy execution while providing input into engineering policies, systems, practices, standards, and procedures in the H2 Project domain.
Provide technical advice as required by the H2 Project Programme Managers and ensure an appropriately skilled engineering leadership structure in each project with adequate depth. Provide specialized Shaft, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (C & I), and asset management services.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Assesses and improves skills and resourcing within the function (technical and behavioural)
- Coordinates and integrates knowledge sharing across the discipline and the company
- Leads Engineering-related talent management
- Leads Engineering Knowledge Management and best practice transfer
- Ensures succession plans are in place for key staff in Engineering
- Establishes and maintains appropriate systems for Asset Management
- Manages and controls departmental expenditure within agreed budgets
- Assists operations with technical advice, support and oversight for day-to-day operations and major projects
- Oversees effective management of assets including machinery, mobile equipment and fixed plants to achieve maximum value
- Demonstrates high-level of applied expertise in maintenance management
- Establishes and maintains a comprehensive compendium of engineering standards and specifications
- Provides people leadership by managing workload, assigning tasks and reviewing/recognising outputs of team members
- Provides technical guidance and support to project engineers and EPCMs
- Influences and reviews project designs
- Supports stage gate reviews of major projects
- Conducts capacity and capability building of project engineers and EPCMs
- Performs quality reviews during the building phase
- Ensures operational readiness of all projects
- Sets up and maintains a programme to provide technical assurance to The Head of Projects
- Builds technical capability and capacity throughout the discipline
- Provides Visible Felt Leadership (VFLs) in safety, health, environment and sustainable development
- Embeds leading SHE management practices, identify areas for improvement and recommend actions to address gaps
- Identifies, monitors and mitigates SHE risks
- Manages own development
- Ensures provision with correct development opportunities
- Ensures that codes of practices, standard operating procedures, legal and statutory requirements are adhered to in area of responsibility
Other Job Responsibilities
- Manages all safety, health and environmental policies and procedures as well as Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act in area of responsibility
Education
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation or Equivalent
Experience
- 15 years post qualification experience in an engineering field, of which 5 should have been served at Senior Management level in a mining environment (Shafts/Underground/TMM/Plant and Project execution.)
- Relevant technical and operational engineering-related experience in underground Kimberlite mines and Kimberlite process plants are key requirements. Experience in underground Kimberlite mining and processing project environments would be advantageous.
