SENIOR LECTURER IN CHINESE STUDIESĀ (CONTRACT POSITION)

VACANCY NO: FH/CS02/2023

The Chinese Studies Programme in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana aims to produce graduates who are both competent in Mandarin Chinese and able to work in academic, public and private positions where extensive and expert knowledge of China is required.Ā  The programme is currently seeking to recruit one (1) Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies.

Duties:Ā The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach post-graduate and undergraduate level courses on Chinese society and culture (taught in English) and Mandarin Chinese at all levels in the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies degree programme; (ii) supervise post graduate and undergraduate studentā€™s projects as need may arise; (iii) participate in the academic, governance and social engagement inĀ Chinese StudiesĀ related fields; (iv) provide academic leadership and mentorship to staff in the Chinese Studies Programme in line with the vision of the University of Botswana as outlined in relevant policy documents;Ā (v)Ā provide leadership and co-ordination in the fields of teaching, research and service for the Programme;Ā (vi)and perform any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Programme Coordinator and Chair.

Requirements:Ā Applicants should have: (i) a PhD in Chinese Studies, Teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Second/ Foreign Language, or related field; (ii) a Masterā€™s degree in Chinese Studies, Teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Second/ Foreign Language or related field; (iii) a Bachelorā€™s Degree in Chinese Studies, Teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Second/ Foreign Language or related field; (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 4 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases. The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc published by recognised publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every 2 years; (vii) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (viii) lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (ix) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (x) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); (xi) recognised as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these) and (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement. The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity: on-going internally and/or externally supported research; (ii) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) examiner/ moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally and (iv) effective and experience in running a programme/course;Ā (v) attainment of Level 5 or 6 in theĀ Hanyu shuiping kaoshiĀ (HSK) proficiency exam (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (ii) attainment of Advanced Level in the HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese), etc.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorised into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.
