Main purpose of the position

The Senior Engineer for the Scada and Smart grid engineer will manage all activities on the implementation of SCADA and Smart grid systems. This will require the involvement in the designing and implementations of systems that can regulate smart grids and make them operate effectively and direct staff within their department to ensure projects are completed efficiently.

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyse the current SCADA and Smart Grid systems in BPC and elaborate proposals for improvement to ensure next generation products
  • Influence cross-functional stakeholders to integrate business processes, standardize across the BPC network and drive fast decision making to enable an accelerated SCADA and Smart Grid implementation schedules.
  • Provide regular updates to the business leadership team on project progress and escalate as necessary to remove issues
  • Drive business case optimization and value engineering initiatives for SCADA and Smart Grid offerings.
  • Design and certification of various standards like UL, IEC and other safety regulative
  • Compile Technical Purchase Specifications.
  • Manage the development of Hardware-In-the-Loop test equipment.
  • Manages SCADA and Smart Grid projects impacting on the total organisation, using sophisticated program management methodologies and tools.
  • Oversees and executes multiple projects in line with set time and quality management standards by developing a master programme and sub-programmes, creating contractors/supplier contractual conditions, and incorporating them into tender documents.
  • Establishes quality management plan and persons responsibilities for implementation, monitors implementation of quality assurance and reports on obligations.
  • Monitors and records information flow against the agreed information flow programmes.
  • Develops a cost / feasibility plan and establishes a cost coding structure for medium to large projects.
  • Monitors and reports on costs, controls change to the cost plan and manage implementation of corrective action.
  • Establishes a procurement strategy and plan including the lead time planning of consultants, suppliers and contractors (plan to include methods of obtaining quotations, offers and tenders, measures used to appoint bidders).
  • Manages procurement and award process, administers and manages form of contract.
  • Applies knowledge of the discipline and innovative skills to stay abreast with new developments to improve own efficiency.
  • Addresses problems as related to own field of expertise.
  • Applies technical skill to accomplish the job effectively, communicates and translates technical terms so that others can understand.

  • Proposes and implements staff development plans for the area of responsibility to ensure competent, efficient and motivated staff.
  • Coaches and mentors others to help solve technical or procedural problems and issues.
  • Adheres to all safety and loss control standards (Safety Health and Environmental) contained in the Corporation’s standards are adhered to.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Degree in Electrical Power Engineering or equivalent.
  • Membership of the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required.
  • Additional project management qualifications will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Five (5) years post qualification experience and good knowledge in Substation Automation system with programming and configuring SCADA software package
  • Experience with DMS or ADMS platforms
  • Experience with planning, design, or implementation of utility automation projects.
  • Knowledge of industry leading technologies in all industrial Distributed Energy Resources (DER) categories, including, but not limited to energy storage, solar PV, demand response, EV charging and AMI.
