SENIOR ENGINEER-MECHANICAL (X1)

Main purpose of the position
To plan, coordinate and control the activities of Mechanical Maintenance Department to ensure maximum availability and performance to agreed standards in terms of plant reliability, availability, technical efficiency, environmental impact and safety at an acceptable cost and risk.
Job Responsibilities
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses highly complex equipment and systems for emergency repairs, applies expertise to lead major equipment re-builds and guides planned installation of complex systems.
- Reviews and approves maintenance programmes, standards and procedures to ensure plant and equipment availability and reliability.
- Delivers prescribed outcomes for a designated part of a research program by working within established research systems.
- Manages relationships with clients to ensure their needs are met while supporting senior colleagues in managing more important client and customer relationships.
- Analyses specified problems and issues to find the best technical and/or professional solutions.
- Develops and/or delivers elements of a strategic planning system with guidance from management.
- Prepares tender documents’ contracts and functional specifications for plant upgrades.
- Improves personal performance and coaches others when required using performance management systems and protocols.
- Provides operational support services and sometimes acts as first-line supervisors of a transactional operations area while using existing systems and protocols.
- Reviews and approves changes in the mechanical designs and operating procedures of plant and equipment to enhance plant efficiency and reliability.
- Performs periodic inspections and review of scope of work for reengineering and refurbishment of the plant and equipment to control the standards and quality of work to optimise plant reliability
- Determines departmental priorities on technical and manpower plans to the Generation Division’s long, medium and short terms’ strategies and requirements.
- Analyses key themes using data from a wide range of sources and identifies possible impacts on the business.
- Prepares the mechanical maintenance department annual Expenditure and Capital budgets for approval and controls expenditure to optimise the budget and minimise cost overruns.
- Monitors contractor and consultant project work including equipment installation and certifies completed projects in accordance with agreed contract specifications and standards.
- Develops procedures for area of expertise with guidance from senior colleagues, then monitors implementation of those procedures within the Power Station
- Improves personal performance and coaches’ others when required using performance management systems and protocols.
- Coordinates the implementation of corporate safety rules and regulations.
Qualifications
- A relevant degree in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent.
- Membership of a professional engineering institution will be an advantage.
Experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years relevant post qualification experience of which, at least two (2) years should have been in a management capacity.
- Knowledge and experience of the electricity industry in general, and power generation in particular will be an advantage. Fossil-fired power generation is required.
