Purpose of the Role

To provide Group Mineral Resource Management with geological and technical leadership to support exploration, operations, projects and in defining Debswana Long Term Resource Data Acquisition Strategy. This is delivered by developing and coordinating the provision of an effective geology function to meet Debswana mines diamond production objectives through geological data acquisition, analysis and interpretation.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops budgets and ensures financial resources are sufficient to meet business needs
  • Manages and analyses appropriate capital and operating expenditure which includes all aspects of budget creation, analysis, updating of budget, forecasts and adherence in all areas under the direct control of this position
  • Develops (and manages adherence to) Group MRM / Geology guidelines, taking cognizance of, inter alia: Alignment to
  • MRM strategy and future long term business requirements through the development of Group Endowment guidelines
  • Alignment to shareholder and international best practice geological discipline standards
  • Aligned to the ore body, country rock and structure
  • Appropriate in the MRM value chain, pertaining to the geology, grade, size, volume, density and revenue variables
  • Support of resource classification requirements
  • Develops Debswana Resource assurance plans for operations and projects and ensures the execution against established geological guidelines and standards for projects and operations.
  • Ensures effective technical integration between MRM, Mining and Ore Processing in support of current operations, and current and future projects aligned to Resource Development Plan Strategies
  • Initiates, executes and supports technical investigations, research studies and projects from a geology discipline perspective in the areas of: Growth – Provide expertise and guidance to all Resource Extension Projects
  • Design of conceptual geological models based on a professional and experiential understanding of the processes that formed the ore body, country rock and structure
  • R+D and innovation
  • Integration with other disciplines, particularly mining and metallurgy, in the areas of geo-metallurgy, modifying factors, long term planning and business development
  • Ensuring alignment with International best practice
  • Implements programs in support of Zero Harm through leadership of and participation and commitment in SHEC procedures, and initiatives
  • Identifies and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance
  • Manages subordinates’ key effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
  • Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Creates and prioritizes strategies to drive the development of geology personnel technical skills capabilities by managing the implementation of the departmental talent management initiatives
  • Ensures customer satisfaction on delivery of geology / geo-science services to Exploration, Projects, Operations and Debswana Long Term Strategy
  • Reporting and presenting all the findings of geological work programs to the relevant MRM structures / stakeholders, through project structures, and ensuring that decisions for gate release and advancement to next work phases are planned and completed

Education

  • BSc (Hons) Degree

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years MRM operations and / or diamond exploration with a major mining company of which 8 years have been in a senior position, with strong kimberlite geology emplacement experience.
  • Involvement and 3 years exposure to Enterprise / Corporate Long Term Planning Strategy.
  • Comprehensive and thorough understanding of the MRM value chain for both exploration and operations.
  • Member of an appropriate professional body in Southern Africa like GSSA or SACNASP.
  • Legal Certification/Professional Registration
