Background

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH manages change,

During the internship, the qualified candidate will gain an insight into GIZ’s work at GIZ Office

in Botswana and the GIDRM’s work with the SADC Secretariat; he/she will experience

multifaceted activities related to development cooperation and also raise awareness at his/her

university on aspects related to risk-informed development in the SADC-Region. GIZ is

therefore looking for qualified and experienced individuals for the position:

Project Description

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) faces threats from a variety of extreme natural

and human-made hazards notably, floods, droughts, cyclones and earthquakes, which are made more

frequent and severe by the growing impact of climate change and (climate) variability. Climate change

and extreme weather events in SADC have adversely affected the region for the past 15 years and will

become increasingly severe over the next few decades. This calls for the need to improve the capacity

for the management of disaster risk through the application of Risk-Informed Development and the

adoption of gender-sensitive approaches. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale

Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the SADC Secretariat’s Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit

through the SADC/GIZ Project “Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM)” commissioned

by the German Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ).

The objective of GIDRM is to build the capacities and skills of selected decision-makers and regional

organizations and initiatives in Southern Africa and other regions to enable the use of risk-informed

development (RID) principles while considering of context-specific fragility factors.

Main responsibilities:

• Support the GIDRM SADC Component on its activities towards cooperation with the DRR Unit and

regional DRR multi-stakeholders in identifying, documenting, and sharing relevant RID planning

practices and materials.

• Support the GIDRM SADC Component in their coordination and facilitation of DRR learning and

capacity development measures and strategies between the GIDRM and the DRR-Unit towards

scalability and replicability of RID and climate change adaptation approaches, into the portfolio of

development cooperation in fragile contexts.

• Provide support to the GIDRM SADC Component in oversight of technical quality related to DRM

and climate change adaptation topics of bids, tenders, and/or project proposals as well as the

delivery for successful project implementation.

• Provide support for GIDRM SADC Component knowledge management activities.

 

Detailed responsibilities:

 

• Contribute to the uptake of gender-responsive approaches in policy frameworks as prepared by the

SADC and its Member States, supporting processes of ensuring that guideline(s),

recommendations for action and/or toolkits for RID are published.

• Contribute to ensuring that recommendations for improving DRM mechanisms based on cross-sectoral analysis and lessons learned from COVID-19 response and coordination in the SADC

region are published.

• Contribute to assessing policy frameworks for RID mainstreaming and alignment with Member

States’ national policies; while supporting the GIDRM SADC Component in documenting RID

related processed into the strategies of value chains, sectors, or sub-areas at the SADC national

or sub-national level as well as into in the portfolio of technical cooperation projects in the

region.

• Contribute to ensuring that learning experiences are published and made available from each value

chain(s), sector(s), or sub-area(s) where measures based on the RID guiding principle have been

implemented.

 

Requirements:

• Completed Degree or nearing completion of their post-graduate studies in Disaster (Risk)

Management/ Development Studies/ Environmental or Social Sciences and/or similar

qualifications from a Botswana-based University.

• Analysis and problem-solving skills and independent way of working.

• Communication skills (written and verbal) in English, French, and/or Portuguese are an asset.

• Expertise with MS Office and report writing
