Title: Head of Underground – 5 Year Fixed Term Contract
Jwaneng, BW
Purpose of the Role
To provide strategic direction and thought leadership towards the planning, management and delivery of the Debswana Underground Projects, as well as project/operational technical support and assurance
Key Job Responsibilities
- Develops frameworks, including best practice standards, policies, procedures and processes for transitioning an Open Pit Operation to an Underground Operation, with an emphasis on mechanized and automated mining,
- Provides technical assurance on the integrity of the project and operational processes and through continuous improvement, identifies the need for review or development of best practice standards for safe execution of the underground mining activities
- Develops an integrated project execution plan in line with Debswana standards and reports on key technical issues, risks and opportunities for value add in order to maximise business and financial outcomes over the life of the project
- Develops a comprehensive change management plan for the transition from open pit mining to underground mining, including a stakeholder management plan that encompasses the Debswana leadership, operations, technical functions and government institutions
- Develops and implements a system for skills development and knowledge transfer to project candidates during project execution, with a partiality towards utilising local workforce and community businesses in line with the Debswana CEEP
- Leads a multidisciplinary, diverse and inclusive team and manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders including a Tier 1 contractor and other service providers
- Develops frameworks and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principle/requirements
- Responsible for and manages the overall Functional safety, health and the environmental programme in line with organizational strategy and objectives
- Builds relationship across the Debswana pipeline by sharing business information and knowledge management
- Establishes and maintains business partner relationships with all internal and external key stakeholders to facilitate the optimal functioning of the business
- Actively pursues a standardised companywide approach around the exchange and protection of information between Group of Companies and individuals to ensure effective knowledge management according to organisational objectives
- Manages the key subordinate’s effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
Other Job Responsibilities
- Oversees the implementation of the departmental talent management initiatives by ensuring the right competence and effectiveness of manpower (capacity building) through developing and implementing career, localization/succession, training and development
Education
- Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering
- Post graduate qualification in Mineral Economics or Master of Business Administration
Experience
- Minimum twenty (20) years post graduate experience, fifteen (15) of which should have been in major underground mine design and execution projects.
- Experience working in a mechanized underground mining operation is advantageous.
- Proven track record in mine development, operational management and large scale mining projects.
- Experience in shaft sinking, diamond mining development and its operations is advantageous.
- Strong exposure to technology-driven mining advancements, AI integration and automation.
