Main purpose of the position

To assist in planning, organising and supervising protection activities on the Transmission and Distribution network to ensure safe, effective, and reliable protection system

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises testing, maintenance and repair of protection systems and devices to maximise their reliability.
  • Coordinates and supervises installation of protection and control systems to ensure efficiency and reliability of the protection system.
  • Leads commissioning activities on protection systems to ensure compliance to the approved designs.
  • Configures control & automation devices or systems to enhance systems visibility for continuous monitoring
  • Maintain up to date data base of protection documentation and drawings for easy of reference.
  • Carries out troubleshooting and diagnoses equipment and systems for effective emergency repairs.
  • Supervises the protection teams on executing preventive maintenance and inspections for reliable protection system.
  • Support specialists in setting up and testing protection equipment and ensure compliance to prescribed standards.
  • Installs complex protection systems in accordance with set guidelines.
  • Plans the routine preventative maintenance of the Transmission & Distribution protection and control systems to ensure effective performance.
  • Designs and modifies protection schemes to optimise system performance and operations.
  • Implements approved protection and control settings to ensure accurate and reliable operation of the equipment
  • Performs calculations and simulations to determine optimal protection and control settings against equipment specifications.
  • Performs post fault analysis and diagnosis to determine the nature and location of the faults to prevent recurrence and speedy restoration.
  • Supervises contract service providers and ensure that they deliver projects within an established contract management plan.
  • Plan and organise and supervises project activities to ensure that they are delivery of quality project, within time and budget.
  • Collects information from all Protection and control equipment for system performance monitoring, evaluation, and system studies.
  • Compiles adhoc and periodic sectional activity reports (including system performance).
  • Collects and analyse systems disturbances (faults) data or information for improvement of protection systems performance
  • Prepares a draft budget in accordance with system and sectional needs.
  • Implements and monitors expenditure against approved budget.
  • Schedules for periodic calibration and testing of protection test equipment in line with original equipment manufacturers and BPC standards.
  • Prepares schedules for periodic testing and maintenance of protection equipment.
  • Investigates protection misoperations between BPC and large power users to correct the same for ensuring continuous supply.
  • Engages large power users of BPC systems developments which affects their protection settings.
  • Executes a communications plan by working within established internal communication systems and procedures.
  • Produces daily updates of protection systems performance to inform management.
  • Identifies shortcomings in existing processes, systems, and procedures.
  • Review protection scheme to identify short comings and suggests improvements
  • Provides input into the development of procedures for an area within the section, then monitors the implementation of those procedures.
  • Manages the motivation and discipline of staff in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives.
  • Adheres to all Safety Health and Environmental standards contained in the Corporation’s policies

Qualifications

  • Recognised Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Membership of the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required (Graduate Category)
  • A valid Class B Driver’s license (Within 12 months from date of appointment).
