Job Description

Basic Function of the Position

The Generator Technician will be responsible for inspecting, servicing, and repairing diesel-powered generators and related power-distribution systems on all mine sites. The incumbent’s purpose will be maximizing equipment reliability, minimizing power interruptions to mining operations (Zone 5 and other infrastructures), Boreholes (Haka) and Process plant Power plant where there are MTU Units and to ensure strict compliance with the site’s safety and environmental regulations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Your key accountabilities include:

  • Performing major internal overhauls, engine disassembling, component machining, and precision reassembling of high-horsepower MTU mining-grade engines.
  • Restoring and replacing critical support machinery, specifically turbochargers, multi-stage fuel injection systems, high-volume water pumps, and heavy-duty cooling radiators.
  • Conducting scheduled oil changes, replacing industrial-grade filtration units, and meticulously analysing oil samples for metal shavings to predict internal component wear.
  • Programming, wiring, and resolving complex fault codes on digital generator controllers like Deep Sea Electronics.
  • Utilizing specialized diagnostic software to trace mechanical failures, electrical shorts, and performance drops within harsh, dusty mining environments.
  • Carrying out daily physical inspections of lines, valves, and structural mounts to proactively address minor vibrations or fluid leaks before they cause full system shutdowns.

Minimum Qualifications, Competencies and Experience Required

  • National Craft Certificate (NCC) in Heavy Plant Mechanic, Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanics, or any related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven professional experience in diesel power generation, preferably within a heavy industrial or mining environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act, and Mines and Minerals Act.
  • Good knowledge of project management with proven project management experience.
