GENERAL MANAGER – PROJECTS (X1) – GABORONE
In its pursuit to become a Competitive Commercial Power Utility within the Region, Botswana Power Corporation invites applications from suitably qualified, highly energetic, dynamic, result oriented, innovative, and customer focused individuals, who believe they can be part of a great team that delivers power to Botswana to apply for the below listed position not later than 26th August 2023.
Main purpose of the position
To plan, organize, direct, control, coordinate and manage the provision and projects management throughout the Corporation’s operations to maximise availability and utilisation of high value projects for both internal and external stakeholders, its reliability and safe implementation of projects at power plants, transmission, and distribution in the most cost-effective manner to contribute to the safe, efficient operation of the Botswana Power Corporation, and enhance profitability.
Job Responsibilities
- Establishes departmental strategic objectives in line with the Organisation’s mission, vision and overall strategic objectives and the Corporation’s business plans.
- Provides strategic direction, policy formulation and focus in the continuous appraisal of the effectiveness of current Corporate projects practices (design, development, and projects programmes) and to constantly explore cost effective options in order to sustain and improve corporate performance and targets.
- Develops operational models to evaluate capital development options which will optimise utilisation of infrastructure projects , plant and equipment and reduce overall operating costs.
- Develops and manages approved capital and projects operational budget, approving expenditure in accordance with laid down procedures.
- Reviews maintenance costs and identifies opportunities to reduce costs through initiatives such as Planned project maintenance, outsourcing, JIT parts management etc
- Identifies opportunities for out-sourcing of projects and negotiates service level agreements on behalf of the organisation.
- Develops and maintain multi-year project capital expenditure review.
- Prepares estimates and detailed project plans for all phases of project
- Full project life cycle ownership: successful project delivery will include full implementation from initiation to deployment for several initiatives simultaneously.
- Advises on technical feasibility of business and infrastructure development projects proposals.
- Continuously monitor the adequacy and availability of resources and their reliability for operational use by ensuring the application of sound and cost-effective maintenance policies and practices.
- Monitors and checks the performance of engineering service contractors to ensure achievement of engineering standards and adherence to service contract agreement.
- Manages the implementation of major projects and development programmes to ensure completion of programmes within cost, time frame and specifications.
- Ensure project control protocols adherence and documentation for project delivery in accordance with best practice project management principles.
- Provide status reporting on project milestones, deliverable, dependencies, risks and issues, communicating across leadership
- Reviews manpower budgets to ensure effective utilisation of manpower through optimal staffing levels.
- Reviews departmental and managerial performance targets and ensures the effective management and implementation of PMS within the department.
- Recommends process improvements or changes that will improve the effectiveness and/or efficiency of operations.
- Participates in working to achieve satisfactory and required standards or grades in audits.
- Delivers own prescribed outcomes and/or provides support services by using the organisations safety, health and environment systems and protocols.
- Ensures compliance with organisational and statutory health and safety policies and procedures in the provision of corporate projects.
- Establishes and maintains governance arrangements for the delivery of projects, programmes, and portfolios:
- Identifies and monitors projects, programmes, and portfolio risks; plans and implements responses to the risks and responds to other issues that might affect them.
- Implements project controls protocols and documentation to ensure projects are delivered in accordance with best practice project governance principles
Qualifications
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, or a relevant Engineering degree from a recognised university.
- A Masters in Project Management, or Business Administration (MBA) and or any other related master’s degree will be an added advantage.
- Project Management Professional Certificate e.g. PMP and or Prince 2 is desirable.
- Membership of the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required
- Professional membership from a relevant credible institution will be an added advantage.
Experience
- At least 10 years post qualification experience, five of which should have been at senior level, in the management of the full cycle of Capital projects.
- Management of a portfolio of projects that span across the organisation.
- Understanding of Electrical Power operational rules and regulations is also essential.
