Job Description

To assist in the safe and cost-effective flying of aircraft as second in command ensuring compliance with legal and company policies, standards and procedures in accordance with schedules in the most cost-effective manner consistent with optimising flight safety and passenger comfort.

The First Officer (F/O) is responsible for the safety, efficient operation and management of the aircraft. He/She carries out pre-flight checks of aircraft systems and monitors in-flight data to ensure smooth aircraft operations. F/O controls and navigates the aircraft across safe terrains and weather together with the Captain. He/She is able to manage flight emergencies in accordance with airline operating policies. After landing, he/she completes post-flight and shut-down reports and/or checklists.

Prepare Aircraft for Flight

  • Conduct flight execution briefings
  • Obtain weather reports on destination and alternate airports
  • Complete external inspection of aircraft

Operate Aircraft System

  • Detect hazardous or risky flight conditions
  • Communicate with respective countries’ ATC during overflights and comply with instructions

Maintain Aircraft and Passenger Safety

  • Conduct passenger announcements on turbulence and other safety issues
  • Communicate with ATC and Airport Emergency Services (AES) during emergencies

Customer Service Excellence

  • Enhance customer experience by ensuring that the section meets their performance standards and targets in order to meet the airline’s customers’ expectations
  • Maintain effective working relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers and service providers by ensuring adherence to service level agreements and contractual requirements

Airline Transportation Effectiveness

  • Keeps abreast with latest developments in flight operations and recommends initiatives that lead to process improvement by applying acquired knowledge, skills and best practice.
  • Continuously strives to improve performance and business process flow to reduce turnaround times
  • Conducts, in accordance with the provisions of the Flight Operations Manual, flight preparation, aeroplane operation and post-flight duties assigned to him by the Captain.

Safety and Quality Management

  • Complies with Quality and Safety Management policies and procedures in all activities undertaken in order to minimise unsafe incidents and accidents
  • Applies CRM skills in order to ensure the operation as a team
  • Conducts the flight safely and properly in compliance with the current flight plan and the Captain’s instructions when the Captain is not at the controls.
  • Reports to the Captain any fault, failure malfunction or defect which he/she believes may affect the airworthiness or safe operation of the aeroplane including emergency systems.
  • Makes use of the Air Botswana’s Occurrence Reporting Schemes in all cases with a copy of the report being communicated to the Captain as and when the report is not of an anonymous or confidential nature.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensures that the department complies with all the Botswana and International regulations as stipulated in the CAAB CARS and technical standards as stipulated in CAAB CATS
  • Ensures that operation of aircrafts is in compliance with IOSA requirements

Minimum Education Required

·         Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)/ Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)/Multi-Crew Pilot Licence (MPL) and an IATA Flight Operations Management course

·         A recognized Diploma/Degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences or equivalent will be an added advantage.

Minimum Experience Required

·         Minimum of 1,500 flying hours as First Officer on large aircraft as defined by CAAB.

·         A minimum of four (4) years post graduate experience of which two (2) years should have been in a role in a similar position.

·         Recency: A First Officer or Senior First Officer may not carry out take-offs or landings unless he/she has operated as pilot flying during take-off and landing of the aircraft type.
