Job Description

The primary purpose of an Underground Diamond Drill Mechanic is to support the diamond drilling operations in various tasks and ensure that the diamond drill core and support equipment are maintained to the highest level. Active involvement in achieving a safe workplace and positive work environment is a must. This key position will provide an excellent opportunity to further develop skills of an individual’s career in a safe, dynamic environment while working with a team of underground professional miners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs of electric/hydraulic diamond drill equipment (For Example: greasing machinery, hydraulic hose replacement), inclusive but not limited to trucks, utility vehicles, rebuilding of pumps.
  • Compliance with all HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) policies and procedures.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform necessary repairs in a timely and safe manner
  • Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety
  • Assist supervisor with management of drill breakdowns, moves and setup of rig.
  • Provide additional support to management as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • NCC in Heavy Plant Mechanics, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering an advantage.
  • At least 3-5 years relevant work experience, Underground experience would be an added advantage.
  • Background/experience with operation and troubleshooting electric hydraulic diamond drills, previous knowledge and prior experience of hydraulic systems is preferred.
  • Experience in rebuilding Boyles B20 heads, downhole pumps coupled with welding experience would be considered a great asset.

  • Safety consciousness: Diamond drill workplaces can be hazardous if proper health and safety procedures are not followed.
  • Communication skills: Diamond drill mechanics need to be able to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate in English is a necessity (written and verbal).
  • Ability to organise and establish priorities, following up on outstanding tasks and closing out any completed works / task where necessary.
  • Ability to demonstrate PNR values and core competencies
