Job Title: Data Protection Officer (External Advert)

Location: Botswana Railways Headquarters, Mahalapye, Botswana

Overview:

Botswana Railways is inviting applications from experienced legal professionals for the position of Data Protection Officer (DPO). The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with data protection legislation and overseeing the organization’s data privacy framework. This role reports directly to the General Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor compliance with data protection regulations through internal audits and policy reviews
• Advise the organization and its employees on data protection obligations
• Provide guidance on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and ensure remedial actions are taken
• Maintain and implement data protection policies and systems to ensure ongoing legal compliance
• Act as the contact point for data subjects and regulatory bodies such as BOCRA
• Manage the Data Security Incident Response Plan to handle data breaches
• Draft and maintain data protection notices, consent forms, and related documents
• Train employees on data protection awareness and compliance
• Assist with legal and regulatory compliance across the organization
• Monitor privacy and data protection developments to maintain compliance
• Conduct awareness sessions and support audits and investigations

Experience and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Law
• At least 5 years post-qualification legal experience
• Minimum 3 years of experience in data protection compliance or a related field
• Deep understanding of GDPR and relevant data protection laws
• Valid certificate of practice
• Experience in legal, audit, or risk management roles

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities focused on risk and compliance
• Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information under pressure
• Excellent understanding of data protection legislation and regulatory frameworks
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with internal and external stakeholders
• Self-motivated and proactive in driving compliance and governance initiatives
