Coded Welder (x3 Positions) – Botswana Power Corporation

Main purpose of the position

To fabricate and weld various metal structures and high-pressure vessels in line with all relevant procedures, set specifications and safety standards to meet the operational plant requirements and specified timelines.

Job Responsibilities

• Works within current compliance processes, systems, procedures, and standards
• Carries out welding repair work in accordance with approved repair procedures and welding procedure specifications in high pressure vessels such as boiler drums, deaerators, steam receivers, boiler tubes and steam pipes.
• Performs related tasks such as post weld heat treatment, grinding and cutting.
• Removes and replaces damaged boiler tubes using hand tools, pneumatic tools and lifting equipment.
• Witnesses hydrostatic pressure tests, inspects, and repairs tube leaks that may arise.
• Repairs and reinforces steel structures and casing for plant and equipment.
• Repairs leaks on water reticulation system pipe work.
• Rebuilds and repairs worn out or broken parts and components by welding deposition.
• Reconditions cracked or defective cast or non-ferrous parts and components such as bearing housings and casings by using welding, soldering or brazing processes
• Erects and installs structures such as masts and bed plates for mounting new plant and equipment.
• Carries out modifications and upgrades such as pipework replacement on existing plant and equipment to improve operational efficiency.
• Examines detailed drawings or specifications to find out job, material and equipment requirements and fabricates parts or sub-assemblies.
• Recommends modifications to sketches and designs of metal products.
• Performs related tasks such as heat treatment and grinding.
• Assembles parts and structures by welding, bolting and riveting.
• Cleans and maintains workstation in a tidy manner during and after welding works.
• Inspects welding tools and equipment and reports on damages or missing tools and equipment to the supervisor.
• Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.

Qualifications

• National Craft Certificate (NCC) in Welding and fabrication or Boiler making from a recognized institution.
• Valid Coded welder certificate

Experience

• Minimum of 2 years post qualification as welder in an Industrial environment
• Exposure to Power Plant environment as an added advantage
