Job Description

Job Summary

Support the Head of Strategy and Projects in the planning, management, and delivery of large complex project studies to support the MCM Strategic Plan and the subsequent implementation of approved expansion, business improvement and stay in business projects within the project’s portfolio.

The key focus will be in the expansion of existing coal mining, coal processing and associated infrastructure areas. The following will be the necessary competencies.

Key Effectiveness Areas 

  • Effective safety leadership and behavior modeling for the project team, consultants, specialists, contractors, and construction workforce.
  • The development of an integrated plan (for the scope of work) incorporating all stakeholders requirements and technical functions while meeting Morupule Coal Mine standards.
  • Set-up of required project controls to ensure delivery against these standards and the objectives as defined in the project charter.
  • Effective leadership of cross-functional teams in line with the MCM values.
  • Transparent reporting of progress to stakeholders.
  • The Project Manager must work in the study phase, where the detailed analysis of alternatives is considered, and if financially viable, approved for execution.

Key Activities

  1. Scope definition, and project structure to the required level of details (concept, feasibility, and execution phases).
  • Able to apply divergent thinking to the project issues, demonstrate rigorous and impartial decision making to assess project issues, alternatives, and options to arrive at a financially viable solution.
  • Demonstrate managerial courage to inform stakeholders if projects do not meet MCM standards
  1. Develops integrated, cross-functional Project Execution Plans (PEP) including but not limited to the following:
  • Execution Strategy
  • Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning and Operational Readiness plans
  • Detailed Schedule and Estimate
  • Project Controls and Change Management plans
  • Stakeholder and Communication plans
  • Close-out Plan
  1. Sets-up Project for success, taking cognizance of inter alia:
  • Alignment on roles and responsibilities with senior leadership and client (operations)
  • Performance orientated agreements with external partners
  • Establishment of project controls aligned to execution strategy
  • Alignment on roles and responsibilities with all team members
  1. Ensures transparent reporting of progress supported by:
  • QA of the data collection process
  • Analysis and interpretation of root cause of project variance
  • Remedial actions to rectify or alternatively substantiated forecasted impact to the project
  1. Provides effective leadership and management of cross-functional team to deliver project against objectives as defined in the project charter.
  • Driving and verifying the documented risk assessment process from the project/business level down to construction safety
  • Reinforcing the Zero Harm objectives of the project through being present at safety inductions and site pre-start and toolbox meetings
  • Participating in all project safety incident investigations, leading when appropriate
  • Holding responsible persons accountable for completion of safety actions before due date
  • Implementing root cause identification and behavior modification in preference to disciplinary action

Minimum requirements 

  • Degree in Engineering, Geology, Mining, Metallurgy or equivalent
  • Subsequent qualification in project management or demonstrated record of achievement.
  • 10 years or more experience in the Project Management environment entailing; area such as; Study Management (Front End Loading Studies), Construction management, General Management, Contractor Management and Project Execution in mining and related operations environment, of which should have been as Project Manager or Senior Project Manager level.
  • Project management related certification (PMP, PRINCE2 etc.) (Advantageous)
  • Leadership or Management development program (Advantageous)
  • Safety, Health, and Environment training
  • Must be or eligible to be registered with Engineers Registration Board (ERB) Botswana.
  • You will have or be eligible to hold the statutory mine appointments.

  • Construction / Engineering Project Management Experience
  • General management experience
  • Contractor Management
  • Experience in leading and delivering studies i.e., Pre-feasibility and Feasibility studies
